The Process
Last week was pretty exciting... and BUSY! I have been spending all my free time on putting the books together. I thought you might enjoy seeing the process and love that goes into making Nomemade.
First, we ordered all the pages from a large printing company. They sent me a thousand copies of each page in their own boxes.
Next, I stack a bundle of the pages onto a table so that I can see all of them in order. I pick up one page from each stack to make a single book.
I organize them into these boxes and use post-it notes to separate them. Then I take the boxes to a local company, ImagePro, and they bind the books for me.
I pick up the books from them and this is the final product.
Then I package them up and send them out to the people who have ordered them (a HUGE thank you to everyone who has been supporting us!). This was the last batch of packages that I sent out last week.
I'm not nearly finished with sorting all the books and getting them bound but I will keep working on it! For the people in Nome, AK, Kim will be getting a few boxes of books that she can sell locally if you'd like to purchase from her. For the people in Cedar City, UT, you can purchase from me or you can even find them now at Sunshine Nutrition- the very FIRST store to carry our books!
Again, thank you so much to everyone who has been supporting us with this project!

Finishing Nomemade
This is Lynn here. So Kim and her husband, Sean, came down to visit me in Utah. It was so great to be able to spend some time with them! We spent our time talking, shopping, going out to dinner, shopping, watching movies, shopping, playing with my kids, and shopping (Kim likes to shop when she's outside of Nome). We also spent a large portion of our time together working on the cookbook! Check out some of the dishes that Kim made just for you!
And believe me- each and every one of these dishes was delicious! We also had a photo shoot for our Author Photo. I'm in the blue shirt, Kim is in the maroon.
On our very last day together we did an interview for KNOM radio in Nome which you can listen to HERE. It was a lot of fun and Laureli Kinneen was great to talk with.
The book is finally coming to an end. We've finished all the photos, typed up all the recipes, and today we added in the last of the edits. We just have a few minor touches left to do and then we will send it to the printers, probably next week. I am so excited about this. I honestly can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy, all my own. Thanks to everyone who has been supporting us and cheering us on! We truly appreciate it.
Nomemade is now available for pre-order on our Facebook Page. Go buy a copy!

Nomemade Cookbook
Hello All! This is Lynn, Kim's sister. Kim has graciously decided to allow me to post on her blog with her. We are so excited to announce that we are doing a cookbook together!
Kim and I have been talking about this idea together for years but it never seemed like it was really something we could actually do or we had no idea how to go about doing it. Then one day the stars aligned and we were blessed to have an amazingly talented person come into our lives. Just a few short months ago a woman named Ali Eisenach moved into my neighborhood and we became fast friends. It turns out that Ali writes, publishes, and sells her own cookbooks and is successful at it. One day Ali approached me about helping her with the graphic design of her next cookbook (Graphic Design is one of my hobby's- I made the cover of our Nomemade book). I was more than thrilled to swap "favors" with her. I told her I'd help her with her book if she'd be willing to take the pictures for the Nomemade book and show me the ropes of self publishing. Luckily for us, she agreed! You can learn more about Ali and her cookbooks HERE.
The cookbook will be in full color all throughout with amazing pictures of the food and simple recipes to follow. Most of the recipes focus on the foods that come from Nome, Alaska: Alaskan King Crab, Salmon, Moose, Muskox, Fireweed, Tundra Berries, etc. However, we also included some of our family favorites from growing up and since our mother is from Vietnam, you can guess that a lot of those foods will be Asian inspired.
Again, I can't tell you how excited I am about this project! It really is a dream come true for us. The book will be ready for purchase sometime in September. We just have a few more recipes to do for the book and then we're sending it off to the printers. Can't wait! Thank you for supporting us and if you haven't done so yet, please "Like" our Facebook Page.

Losing It...
If someone told me a year ago that a year from now I would be 48 lbs lighter... I wouldn't have believed them.
It started as a bet between my sister and I. We were both feeling sorry for ourselves wanting to loose weight but had no motivation to do anything about it. She lives in southern Utah and I in Alaska. I remember telling her that I didn't care anymore and had no motivation. I told her that it bothered me that I didn't care. I wanted a quick fix a miracle pill or to somehow obtain large amounts of money to get weight loss surgery done. I wanted to lose weight by doing nothing. Since this was not an options my sister, Lynn, suggested we both lose weight together like a competition. I REALLY DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS, but with constant nagging I accepted the challenge.
Around the same time my work was promoting a 10 in 10 program. Lose 10 lbs in 10 weeks. I thought to myself, I could do that! 1 lb a week. This program would have weekly meetings on Thursday nights. I couldn't go because my son had piano practice. So I gave up on the whole losing weight idea. On the Thursday this program was to begin a notice was sent out to staff and I again thought to myself... I can't go, but took it upon myself to call to see if they had brochures or educational material that I could pick up because I couldn't make the Thursday night meetings. They suggested to come on Fridays during my lunch break. This worked well for me. I went to the first meeting and was told that in order to be successful I needed to attend the meetings each week. I did what was told and learned a lot from the instructors and other attendees.
With the help of co-workers I also attended Zumba at our local Recreational center and discovered that I liked it. I also enjoy Just Dance 2 on the Wii.
Through one of the meetings I learned of a free iphone app called "Myfitnesspal" where I could track my calories gained and loss.
Then I watched the numbers on the scale go down at each of my weekly weigh ins.
Watching the numbers go down was my motivation. Co-workers even noticed my clothes getting looser.
I'm rockin' the skinny jeans and my face was getting smaller too...
-->
It's January 1, 2012 today... What's your New Years resolution? If it's losing weight this is your year to do it. Everyone is doing it... and you can too.
Thanks to my Heavenly Father for answering my prayers by blessing me to be around wonderful people.
Thanks to my sister Lynn Hicken, for letting me win ;-)

Sooooo, I
did win the bet with my sister. She did lose weight and she has told me
that I'm her new motivation... glad I can help, Lynn ;-)
I've been asked what's my secret and here it is... just plain eating healthier, eating less and exercising... WHO KNEW???
I refused to starve myself and I eat whatever I want but in smaller portions or if I want to eat more I know I need to work out harder.

I refused to starve myself and I eat whatever I want but in smaller portions or if I want to eat more I know I need to work out harder.
I’ve
never been diabetic or have had cholesterol problems but I have been on the
border to it being a problem. I
recently had some blood work done and all my levels are good and I’m healthy.
So there it is, no lipo, no Weight Watchers, no Jenny Craig, no Slim Fast, no Hydrolux.
I refuse to be a spokes person for any fad diets or commercial weight loss programs. Losing weight is a continuous struggle and I don't think I'm done. I'm maintaining and have been for the past few months. I was hoping to lose 50lbs by 2012 but that didn't happen I'm short a couple of pounds and I'm not going to beat myself up over it.
